John Allaire is an award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter from Eastern Ontario. Reviews from national magazines like Canadian Musician and Penguin Eggs have cited John as “a new Neil Young,” “the next Canadian music legend,” and “perfect barroom cool.” The Denver Examiner recently said John has “the lyrical sense of Dylan and the chops of Neil Young…”

John first became known to North American audiences with his alt-rock band, The Town Cryers, in the ’80s and ’90s. After spending two decades touring North America and performing alongside other international acts, John put out his first solo recording in 2003. In 2005, John teamed up with his backing band, the Campistas, and released Thank You Waitress!, an album that went to the top of many college and university radio stations across North America and garnered a particularly large audience in Europe. Summer 2007 brought the release of John’s third solo album, Ghosts of the Royal Motel, with the accompanying North American tour and video for the single “Bourbon”.

In 2009, John released his 12th career studio album (4th solo album) called “Up Hill … Both Ways”. Within months of its release, John won the American Songwriter Assoc. “Best Lyrics” award (Nashville). He also won the 2009 Toronto Indie Music Award (Best Live Act).

He has toured in support of The Black Crowes, Blue Rodeo, Alejandro Escovedo, David Lindley, Donovan, HooDoo Gurus, BoDeans, Lynn Miles, Alanis Morrisette, Drive-By Truckers and many more…

Bill Toms is a Pittsburgh native and has evolved to become one of the best orators in the USA today. He is definitely the reincarnate troubadour. With a guitar, a pen, a lot of passion, Bill Toms connects to an audience and embraces the American traditions of rhythm, blues, soul, folk, and country. His gifts of music and storytelling, paired with his creative compulsion for songs that burrow deep into the soul, have his dedicated fans continually coming back for more.

Bill has opened for and played with a long and impressive list of notables, such as The Band, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Little Feat and Stevie Ray Vaughn. In 1995, his acclaimed CD, “American Babylon,” was recorded and produced by Bruce Springsteen.

Improv at the Elmdale: Wednesday, April 21st!

April 20th, 2010 by Cheryl

Media Advisory:  Improv at the Elmdale: Wednesday, April 21stimprov games graphicr

What happens when an Ottawa web developer nostalgic for his high school improv days turns 40? You get tavern in your improv! Or is that improv in your tavern?

When Ottawa web developer Patrick Denny and his partner, Vicky Smallman, started planning his 40th birthday celebrations, it just made sense to bring together some of his favourite things – improv and beer – to raise some money for one of his favourite organizations, the Canadian Improv Games.

They enlisted the help of Nat Myles, owner of the Elmdale House Tavern, as well as Scott Florence and AL Connors, both local actors who have a long history with the Canadian Improv Games, Canada’s National high school improv tournament.

“I’m always open to new ideas, and improv seems like a great fit for the Elmdale”, said Nat Myles. “If we have a lot of interest on Wednesday, we might look at making it a regular feature”.

Pat was introduced to the CIG in high school, and continued volunteering to the organization until “real life got in the way.”

“Improv, like web development, is about creating fantastic solutions to unforeseen problems under seemingly impossible deadlines. It’s mental parkour; and it’s loads of fun”, said Denny.

“The best birthday present I could ever get is a packed house and a big donation to the Canadian Improv Games”, Denny added.

Improv at the Elmdale will take place on Wednesday, April 21, 8pm at the Elmdale House Tavern, 1084 Wellington Street West. All proceeds from the minimum $5 cover will go to the Canadian Improv Games
