The Independent Filmmakers Co-operative of Ottawa Inc. (IFCO) announces its annual gala première screening of its filmmakers’ works on Saturday, March 20th at the National Library & Archives of Canada. IFCO’s filmmakers are rebelling against the norm with another batch of exciting short films, and Ottawans are invited to experience Ottawa’s REEL REBELS, as the Co-operative showcases all new film works from its incredibly talented filmmakers.

The Independent Filmmakers Co-operative of Ottawa Inc. (IFCO) is on the ‘cutting edge’ of indie filmmaking; encouraging and inspiring local artists to create celluloid based works; films which emphasize creative filmic approaches & processes; films which reflect the individual filmmaker’s personal vision, and films which don’t necessarily conform to any one definitive cinematic genre or style.

At IFCO the principle mode of production is (celluloid) film. IFCO continues to challenge its artists to think outside the box; push the boundaries of image making and reclaim the art of filmmaking. At IFCO we’re keeping it ‘reel’ by retaining the ‘film’ in filmmaking. Over the last 18 years The Independent Filmmakers Co-operative of Ottawa Inc. (IFCO), has supported the creation of well over 200 short length films.

IFCO’s filmmakers’ works have been broadcast locally and nationally on television, and have also screened nationally and internationally at various preeminent film festivals. I’ve often been asked the question why film? Why use film in a digital age? My response is always why not use film? Digital and film each possess their own intrinsic qualities, and it’s really a matter of personal artistic choice, which art form the artist chooses to employ.

At IFCO we’re demystifying the art of filmmaking, making film accessible to “every man” and “every woman.” Film is here, film is now, and film is ALIVE! “Film as dream, film as music. No form of art goes beyond ordinary consciousness as film does, straight to our emotions, deep into the twilight room of the soul.” – Ingmar Bergman

So, if you’re looking for an alternative viewing experience, IFCO’s REEL REBELS will provide just that!

Join us at The National Library & Archives of Canada (395 Wellington @ Bay Street) on Saturday, March 20th at 7:00pm, in support of some of Ottawa’s best!

You’ll have a great opportunity to mix and mingle with the filmmakers at the after-mixer sponsored by D’Arcy McGees (44 Sparks St. at Elgin – downstairs).

Tickets are $12, and are now on sale at IFCO – located in Suite #140 – #2 Daly Avenue (Arts Court). The Independent Filmmakers Co-operative of Ottawa Inc. (IFCO) is a locally based charity, dedicated to the propagation of Super- 8/16mm and 35mm filmmaking in Ottawa.

You can visit IFCO online at www.ifco.ca for more information about the Co-operative and its amazing programming.

There seems to be a shift happening in the midsts of our livingrooms. While some advanced techies might know, while the rest have no idea, is the fact that you can own a all-in-one Home Entertainment PC for under $450 and they’re called HTPCs. That’s the price of a PS3 or an Xbox360(plus a few games) and also the price I just sold my old Apple PowerBook G4 laptop for. I sold it because it could not run YouTube at its lowest quality anymore, nor could it ever run any HD movies. So I bought a PS3, thinking it could do all of that. Turns out, it doesn’t. It doesn’t read .MKV files (standard HD files you find online) and doesn’t play very well with my network harddrive, where I keep all my photos, music and movies. Nor does it load Revision3.com to watch my online streaming content.

This is what I was looking for in a home theater personal computer setup:

Watch Blu-ray and DVD

Watch movies from a hard drive

Watch movies from my network hard drive

Watch .MKV movie files

Play all sorts of games

Watch internet streaming videos like:

YouTube in HD

Revision3.com Internet Television

College Humor

Integrate perfectly with all my couch needs

So I get my research on and find the sweetest little systems, and I found them on TigerDirect.ca. I’m currently looking at a few different boxes, but these ones are winning:

Asus on Tiger Direct

Zotac on Tiger Direct

$290.99 Zotac IONITX-B-E comes with:

See any resemblances? So, after all that, I kept the Blu-ray and ended with just a bit over my $450 limit; $475.65 with tax. I’m skipping out on the bluetooth keyboard/trackpad for now, that’s another $80 Canadian. I’ll wait till they get cheaper. For now, I’m using a wireless keyboard+mouse (not bluetooth), and it’s a little frustrating at times. I’ll see what I can do with my Apple remote though.

There were other suggestions including Popcorn Hour. A great media center that plays all of your HD and network needs at a super affordable price starting at $179 right up to $361 and look really good next to your TV. The only con about the Popcorn Hour is that you can’t browse the net, but you can stream from popular internet tv sites as in SHOUTcast™ Radio, Blip.tv, Revision 3 and dozens of other online content sources. Probably does Flixster as well.

There’s also Nettops like the Acer Aspire REVO. Some like them, some don’t. Those who like them, love them. Good price, does what it says it does. Can’t install Blu-Ray drives in them.

Once I buy my Zotac, I’ll be going through a few Media Centers. XBMC vs Windows Media Center vs anything I can find.

-Thanks goes out to everyone who helped me out: Rick Dupuis, Jay Mulligan, Greg Burke and HD Nation on Revision3.com

They were really great live.
A change for them playing at Raw Sugar Cafe since they usually play at seedy bars/clubs.
A different atmosphere.
Giant Hand who I’ve seen various times put on a great set.
He is improving very well and with the help of Rolf Klausener backing him on drums and guitar.
You should definitely check out all three musicians.

Wikipedia: Improvisation is the practice of acting, singing, talking and reacting, of making and creating, in the moment and in response to the stimulus of one’s immediate environment and inner feelings.

Sounds a lot like what an actor does, doesn’t it?

I’ve never considered myself an improviser. I did play improv games in high school, but I went to a French school and improvisation in French is very different from its English counterpart. Whereas most anglophones might associate improv with its Who’s Line Is It Anyway? type of humour, for francophones the games take place in a mock hockey arena setting. There is a referee and the teams wear jerseys in various colours. The ref can even assign penalties. Two teams compete and the audience votes after every game (or match) to see which team scored a point. These usually culminate into tournaments and eliminations rounds and all other kinds of sports related analogies.

Here’s a photo from la Ligue nationale d’improvisation to give you some idea of what I am talking about. If you want to know more and understand French, I encourage you to check out the link.

LNI – Vert contre Orange

Although the University of Ottawa did (and does) have a French improv team, I was too intimidated to join at the time. At some point, some of my friends in the Theatre Department and a couple rats who hung around the Café Alternatif (which at the time was a hippy chic amalgamation of found furniture that lived up to its alternative name) decided to start an improv troupe. I think we called ourselves the Improv Dogs. We met every week, played some games against the team at Carleton University and even went to Montreal one time to compete. After a while though, things fell apart and we all went our separate ways.

I then didn’t do any sort of improv until I took a jam class with Ken Godmere at the Ottawa School of Speech and Drama a few years ago. And I guess you could call the work I do with Sanitas Playback Theatre a type of improv, but, like I said, I never considered myself an improviser before.

After last night though, I guess I may be allowed to start calling myself that.

The local (and awesome!) Crush Improv – whom I’ve talked about before – have had a habit of bringing together improvisers from all over for a variety of events. First it was the very popular Improv Awareness and now it’s the Tuesday Make-’em-ups with Crush Improv. I saw the very first Make-’em up in January and immediately approached Crush for an opportunity to play.

Fighting panic and nausea, I finally got my chance to play last night at the Cajun Attic in Ottawa. Most improv teams spend hours rehearsing together, learning both games and how to work with each other. The neat thing about the Make-’em ups is that you get thrown into a pit with three other people you might have never met before and told to just have fun. Easy right?

I was pretty unsteady for the first half of the show, just trying to get my bearings and desperately listen to my teammates. After intermission though, I felt slightly more comfortable, confident and took more chances, though I couldn’t help but walk off stage and think of all the HI-larious stuff I should have said at the time – I swear I am ridiculously funny when no one is watching me!

The amazing Averie MacDonald, birthday boy Dave Lindsay and yours truly.

I had fun and hope that this was just the first of many improv shows in which I will be taking part. Next Tuesday, do yourself the favour of having a ridiculously good time with the gang from Crush. Only $5 cover and all the improv you can stand!

Tuesday Make-’em-ups with Crush Improv – every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. – $5 cover – Cajun Attic (349 Dalhousie St.)

40 English and 11 French professional theatre productions were juried by two teams of local arts professionals (14 English and 10 French) during the 2009 calendar year. Nominations were submitted by secret ballot and tallied by local accountants, Chong Pelot and Marcil-Lavallée. Complete details on award definitions, terms and criteria are available at www.rideauawards.ca

Les Prix Rideau Awards initiative was undertaken in late 2006 as a result of discussion at an open meeting of the regional Canadian Actorsʼ Equity Association. The program aims to raise the profile of locally-produced professional theatre by celebrating its successes.

The draw has been completed and the WINNER has been contacted. Enjoy the show!

Many thanks to Shana Levin and Broadway Across America for the tickets!

STOMP is explosive, provocative, sophisticated, sexy, utterly unique and appeals to audiences of all ages. The international percussion sensation has garnered an armful of awards and rave reviews, and has appeared on numerous national television shows. The eight-member troupe uses everything but conventional percussion instruments – matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters, hubcaps – to fill the stage with magnificent rhythms.

The return of the percussive hit also brings some new surprises, with some sections of the show now updated and restructured and the addition of two new full-scale routines, utilizing props like tractor tire inner tubes and paint cans.

As USA Today says, “STOMP finds beautiful noises in the strangest places.”

STOMP. See what all the noise is about.

It’s commonly said that the sad songs are the best and I doubt you would have found any argument at the NAC’s fourth stage during Ottawa’s February Bluebird North show. This being my first Bluebird concert I didn’t know really what to expect.

Matthew de Zoete, Kelly Prescott, Steve Marriner

Played in by new host and local songstress Amanda Rheaume, folk and blues artists Lynne Hanson, Kelly Prescott, Matt De Zoete and Steve Marriner took to the stage and gave the crowd a wonderful acoustic set of their work.

Amanda Rheaume, all photos by Bryson Masse

The musicians performed one after another, each taking time to say a few words about the song and its inspiration. As in all good folk stories, the topics meandered from tragic to hilarious and often the two overlapped. The evening was put on by the Songwriter’s Association of Canada, so there was an emphasis on the “talky parts”. But, since I like that kind of stuff, it never took away from the show. Each of the musicians explained how they found motivation in their travels and relationships.

Of the idea behind her song More of the Same, Hanson told the story of her adopted grandfather and the loss of his wife to Alzheimer’s disease. The amazing raw imagery in the lyrics really grabbed me.

De Zoete looked to the past and his Dutch heritage, Prescott wrote about her relationships and Marriner even fit in an amusingly scathing song about a woman so bad he didn’t even have to date her. The take away message was clearly that if you want to keep a clean reputation, don’t piss off a musician.

I really dug the informal format. The full stage allowed the performers to converse and share jokes. While the theme of the music that night seemed to border more on the depressing, the laughs didn’t stop. It didn’t have the rehearsed feeling stage banter often has when you’re watching a group that you know has done this fifty times before.

If I could ask for more, all I would need would be more of the artists playing with each other’s songs. As when it happened, it was fantastic.

The night was special and unique and this is what will bring me back to future Bluebird North performances.
