An amazing show!

6 Quick Dick Tricks: A Dirk Darrow Investigation is an amazing show featuring Detective Dirk Darrow (Tim Motley). Darrow is a magic mentalist NCSSI (Not Completely Serious Supernatural Investigator) who weaves a noir storytelling detective story with comedy and lots of fun.

For those unfamiliar with mentalism, it’s an artistic performance style that plays on high intuition to, say, guess something from the past of an audience member. Oh yes, there is plenty of opportunity for audience participation. And card tricks. All very highly entertaining as Darrow leads the audience through his murder investigation. That investigation is the storytelling part of the show, acting as a bit of a pause between some very excellent mentalist feats of, “Wow, how did he do that?” This provides great  pacing for the show, allowing the audience time to gather themselves as he “investigates,” before moving on to his next mentalist feat.

Given that the show is also part parody of the film noir (on stage) genre of hard-boiled detective drama, the storytelling part is a little bit cheesy. But it is cheesy in a purposeful manner, where Darrow knows he’s being cheesy, and he knows the audience knows what he’s doing, making for the whole thing to be a bit of an inside joke. Well, more than a bit of an inside joke because there was plenty of laughter.

The (seeming) cheesiness actually underlines a very masterfully written and performed show because  the inside joke of the parody is also something of a mentalist feat.

All round an excellent show by a talented performer which will leave you amazed and wondering how he did it.
