Camaraderie Comes to the GCTC with “HEROES”

June 3rd, 2010 by Cheryl

The Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC) is excited to present Heroes by Gérald Sibleyras, translated by Tom Stoppard at the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre, 1233 Wellington St. West (at Holland Ave.). Following two preview performances on June 8 and 9, 2010, Heroes officially opens on June 10, 2010 and runs until June 27, 2010.

This boisterous comedy stars some of Ottawa’s favorite veteran performers: Peter Froehlich, John Koensgen and Paul Rainville under the direction of GCTC Artistic Director Lise Ann Johnson, who last helmed the multi-Rideau Award winning The Syringa Tree.  Koensgen co-starred to great critical acclaim in GCTC’s previous production, Facts by Arthur Milner. Froehlich and Rainville are reuniting after appearing together in The Children’s Republic by Hannah Moscovitch. Rainville also recently won the 2010 Rideau Award for Outstanding Performance for his portrayal of Angus in last season’s The Drawer Boy by Michael Healey.

A touching and hilarious tale of camaraderie, Heroes introduces us to three World War I veterans. Longing to recapture their glory days, they plan their escape from the group home where they live. But their plans are humorously thwarted by a variety of obstacles, including their own failing bodies. Gustave suffers from agoraphobia, Philippe keeps passing out, Henri can’t get very far on his gammy leg and, of course, they simply can’t leave behind the stone dog who shares their terrace. Together they discover the true meaning of friendship and teamwork as they prepare for their breakout.

Heroes was translated by Tom Stoppard who also wrote this year’s GCTC/CCLA Lawyer Play, On The Razzle. Among his many accolades, he has won Tony Awards for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Travesties, The Real Thing, and The Coast of Utopia, as well as an Academy Award for co-writing the screenplay to Shakespeare in Love.

The set and costumes are designed by Brian Smith. Lighting design is by Rebecca Miller, while original music and sound design is provided by Cathy Nosaty. The Stage Manager is Laurie Champagne with Apprentice Stage Manager, Chantal Hayman. The Assistant Director is Simon Bloom.
