Some hot Coco (Love Alcorn, that is)
Coco Love Alcorn is a hard woman to pigeonhole. Her music is a gumbo of jazz-inflected chords and idioms and hip-hop performed on her parlour guitar, simmering together with songs about topics as diverse as social justice, the advantages of a bicycle in the city, and the sexual appeal of Intellectual Boys.
The what of the who? Watch this:
Now that you have a sense of the riddle wrapped inside an enigma that is Coco Love Alcorn, lemme throw something else at you. She’s the only folk singer I know of who shows up for gigs with racks of hand-silkscreened clothing and posters along with CDs and more conventional merch.
Coco makes the clothes with her husband, graphic artist Simon Farla.
Here’s a brief interview with Coco, interspersed with bits of her song “Stranger”, which can be found on her last album Joyful.
Info on Coco can be found here; the Black Sheep is here; Simon Farla’s site here, and you can find Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway’s version of “For All We Know” on their eponymous 1972 album. It’s available on iTunes too.

Well, that was delightful – thank you! If you asked ME who’s voice I’d like to have it would be Coco’s!! I sincerely think she’s one of the greatest talents going – and adorable to boot. She’s probably the ONLY artist I will go hear time and time again whenever I have the opportunity.
