Compact Music proudly presents

“THE GLEBE FIRE FUNDRAISER” w/ SADIE HELL + WATTERS BROTHERS + MURDER PLANS

A FUNDRAISER FOR THE DISPLACED RESIDENTS OF 114 GLEBE AVE.

Friday January 29, 2010 / The Royal Oak in The Glebe / 779 Bank St. / 19+ / 8:30pm / Donations at the door ($5 or more recommended) …

After very recently launching their debut full length album on Vinyl LP + CD, and after donating a portion of proceeds from that launch to a charity based in the United States that helps build local unions for sweat-shop workers around the world (sweatfree.org), the orchestral rock band SADIE HELL is performing at yet another fundraising event! This time, however, it’s for a cause that hits much, much closer to home – almost too close actually. Band-leader Ben Welland lives at 192 Glebe Ave.

This event will be open to all members of the public who are of the legal drinking age. Sadie Hell are available for interviews immediately.

About SADIE HELL:

Ever since 2005, SADIE HELL has been lead by singer/songwriter Ben Welland. Live performances (and the band’s recordings) are often rounded out by a revolving door of both classically trained and rock musicians including members of The Balconies, Hilotrons, The Acorn, Rich Aucoin, Politique, NOW, Glenn Nuotio, May-Jun, Clock Strikes Music and As The Poets Affirm. SADIE HELL has toured across Canada, and has shared stages with internationally acclaimed acts like Plain White T’s, Young Galaxy, Brasstronaut, Immaculate Machine, Luke Doucet, Hollerado, Still Life Still, Murder By Death, Museum Pieces and many others. This Friday’s performance will feature a rare and intimate sit-down style performance by band-leader Ben Welland. Accompanying him will be Dave Halabisky on saxophone, May-Jun on backup vocals and guitar, and Mallory Giles on backup vocals and percussion. SADIE HELL is a band with a sound that journalists and band-members alike have a hard time describing accurately so members of the media are invited to download the band’s debut album and listen to it themselves to get an idea of what the band’s sounds like! About WATTERS BROTHERS:

With years of extensive research in psychedelic substances and the rebellious rock and roll lifestyle, Mud and Dan have conducted several secret experiments. All were performed and recorded in their Rock and Roll Mansion located in the capital city of Canada (under close surveillance of the Federal Government). Certain information from these experiments has been leaked and is now available to the public. This is a warning to all those who come in contact with “THE WATTERS BROTHERS REBELLION …and their secret experiments”
It may blow your mind. For more go to myspace.com/thewattersbrothers

About MURDER PLANS:

The MURDER PLANS’ sound is infectious. It will get stuck in your head, in the snap of your fingers, and in the tap of your dancing shoes. Punchy and raucous, sexy and sad, their unique blend of countrified 1950s rock guitar, dark disco drum beats and melodic bass fuses with rich vocal harmonies and compelling lyrics to create songs that are simultaneously emotive and electrifying. The Ottawa foursome’s ability to marry impeccably crafted songs with all the grit and grime of downtown dancehalls has garnered them comparisons to Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Nick Cave, Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse. Truly the product of the genre bending and blending that is happening on playlists everywhere, THE MURDER PLANS’ sound is truly their own. For more go to myspace.com/murderplans

About “THE GLEBE FIRE” ON MONDAY JANUARY 18, 2010:

At 1:40pm on Monday January 18th a major fire struck 114 Glebe Ave, an apartment building with 18 units. With 88 fire-fighters working all day and about 27 fire and emergency vehicles it still took until 3:30am to extinguish the blaze. The Canadian Red Cross had committed to providing 12 of the displaced residents with accommodation in hotel rooms along with meals until Thursday January 21st, but now it is time for the community to step in and help out our neighbours. All of the proceeds from “The Glebe Fire Fundraiser” will be deposited into the RBC account that was set up by the Glebe Community Association (account # 00116-1012954) but donations can also be made online by sending either a PayPal transfer or an email money transfer to glebefirefundraiser@sadiehell.com

One Response to “The Glebe Fire Fundraiser”

  1. Ben Welland Says:

So glad that you posted this info for the fundraiser Cheryl! (especially considering that you’re putting on a concert that same night!) That’s the true mark of an inclusive, and comprehensive Ottawa arts/music blog – “selflessness”. Kudos on that.
And… here’s a more legible version of the poster for tomorrow night’s Glebe Fire Fundraiser! http://sadiehell.com/posters/Email_Attachment_Sized_Glebe_Fire_Fundraiser_Poster_Sadie_Hell_Watters_Brothers_Murder_Plans.JPG

    Ben.
