Last night, I went to the Black Tomato for Sarah Hallman’s CD release party for her new album Likely.

Earlier in the day, I had checked out the songs she has up on myspace but to be honest, it didn’t do the live show justice.

What an amazing sound. Her voice was delicate and pure yet full, and the masterful musicianship and dynamics of the band filled the room with an ambiance that had everyone in the restaurant speechless and mesmerized. At one point, between songs, she said, “You can talk, you know,” but everyone remained frozen in awe.

The instrumentation included two electric guitars played by herself and Brian Simms, various bass instruments played by Adam Fogo, including a viola de gamba (also known, among other monikers, as the bass viol), a standup electric (both bowed and plucked), and the skillful drumming of Matt Ouimet.

It was the perfect way to wind down on a Thanksgiving Sunday.

I highly recommend that you pick up this album and more importantly, please don’t pass up an opportunity to see her live.

Upcoming shows:

  • Friday, October 23, 8pm at Zaphod Beeblebrox with Ron Hawkins (ex Lowest of the Low)
  • Sunday November 1, 4pm at the Black Sheep with Use Every Part of the Deer and The Hinterland Band
